WNFJ2018 WestCoast – The Two Witness Rule

For many former Jehovah’s Witnesses, the phrase “two-witness rule” carries painful memories.

Based on the Watchtower’s interpretation of passages such as Deuteronomy 19:15 and Matthew 18:16, Jehovah’s Witness elders generally require two eyewitnesses before taking judicial action against someone accused of serious wrongdoing. While this standard may appear reasonable on the surface, critics argue that its application in cases of child sexual abuse has often left victims without protection because abuse frequently occurs in private, with no second witness present.

This policy has been the subject of court cases, government investigations, media reports, and heartbreaking personal testimonies from survivors around the world. Many former Jehovah’s Witnesses have asked a troubling question:

What happens when a child courageously reports abuse, but there is no second witness?

At the 2018 West Coast Witnesses Now for Jesus Convention in California, Melissa Bramer, who leads the Hurting to Healing support podcast ministry, shared her personal experience with the Jehovah’s Witness two-witness rule and the impact it had on her life.
