WHAT DO CHRISTIANS DO ABOUT GLENN BECK’S MORMONISM?
“Do you have anything in your archives that gives ‘lay-people’ the tools to answer this kind of PR for the Mormon Church, like Glenn Beck’s testimony for Mormonism?”
OUR RESPONSE:
As far as Glenn Beck goes, we personally like his politics, but as you noted the Mormon Church is milking him to promote Mormonism. The key is to expose the false doctrines of the LDS Church. There really isn’t anything we can do about them flaunting the changes in their converts’ lives.
Glenn seems to have been loved bombed into Mormonism. It is sad that the Christian community did not reach out like the LDS Church did. This is why so many get into Mormonism in the first place. It is not because of the doctrine, but because of the warmth of the Mormon people in the Mormon Church. Let this be a lesson for all of us.
Glenn says he checked out Mormonism, but has never attempted to explain the deeper doctrines of his faith. For example, when has Glenn ever publicly talked about the Mormon belief that God was once a man like us who earned Godhood? Or that God has not always been God because he had to exalt to Godhood after he came to earth and went through “mortal probation”? When has Glenn mentioned that he believes men can “become gods”? Notice these teachings of Joseph Smith, the Prophet and Founder of Mormonism:
“God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens!… I say, if you were to see him today, you would see him like a man in form—like yourselves in all the person, image, and very form as a man.…I am going to tell you how God came to be God. We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea.…he was once a man like us; yea, that God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth, the same as Jesus Christ himself did. …Here, then, is eternal life—to know the only wise and true God; and you have got to learn how to be Gods yourselves,… the same as all Gods have done before you, namely, by going from one small degree to another, …from exaltation to exaltation, until you attain to the resurrection of the dead, and are able to dwell in everlasting burnings, and to sit in glory, as do those who sit enthroned in everlasting power.” —Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, compiled by Joseph Fielding Smith, pp. 345-347
Does this sound like the Christian God who says that He is not a man (Hosea 11:9), that He cannot dwell on the earth (1 Kings 8:27), that man cannot become gods because there was no God formed before Him or after Him (Isaiah 43:10) Or does this sound like Lucifer’s lie (Isaiah 14:12-14, Genesis 3:5)?
Of course Glenn won’t talk about these doctrines because the LDS Church likes to hide behind a “Christian” facade, and exposing these doctrines proves that the Church isn’t “Christian” no matter how much “Jesus” talk they do or changed lives they flaunt.
It is true that living morally can clean up a person’s life, and a loving group of people reaching out to a person’s broken heart and family can really change a person’s life, just as Glenn talks about happening in his own life. But it NEVER purges the heart of sin. The deeper issue is that from a spiritual standpoint, Glenn Beck’s Church – Mormonism – doesn’t have anything to offer beyond this life because it’s deeper doctrines about God are false. Only the REAL Jesus – The One Who is the ONLY God, the One Who died to forgive us of ALL sins, can save a soul for eternity. And that is how we counter this kind of testimony.
